Bitterroot Mix Custom Mineral
Price starts at $50 for 5 pounds. Bulk pricing available.
Serving size 20 grams Copper 200 mg, Zinc 600 mg, Selenium 1.5
Bitterroot Mix is designed to try to fill the deficiencies in all grass and alfalfa hays. The formula takes into account horses also being fed bagged feeds. Most bagged feeds are balanced to themselves, not designed to fill the gaps in mineral ratios. BR Mix is not guaranteed to balance your hay but is a good start to adding the essential copper, zinc and selenium nutrients in a flax base.

Happy Hoof
$30 per pound
Supports cells important to hoof growth and blood flow to the hoof.
Ingredients: Biotin, Celery seed, Copper, Hawthorne, Jiaogulan, Methonine, Nettle, Selenium, Taurine, Zinc
Protein, fats, and minerals are the building blocks of healthy hoof nutrition and supplements.
Inadequate protein, or deficient methionine, limits the ability to produce the hoof wall's structural protein known as keratin. Biotin has also been shown to be important for both good growth and quality. Lastly, Lysine is an often deficient amino acid that is important in hoof protein.
Of the potential nutritional causes of poor hoof quality, trace mineral deficiencies are the most common. To correct this, you need to supplement with good levels of Copper and Zinc in a supplement with low or zero levels of Manganese and Iron which can compete for absorption of those minerals.

- Zinc is required for every step of cell activity in the hoof structure, as well as for forming the structural protein of the hoof wall. Zinc is also the most commonly deficient mineral in the United States and around the world. Studies have confirmed that low Zinc status results in slow hoof growth, weak connections, thin walls and weak horns.
- Copper is also required for enzymes that form the reinforcing protein cross-linkages in hoof tissue. Hoof issues linked to Copper deficiency include cracks, sole hemorrhages, abscesses, thrush and laminitis.
- Zinc and Copper together also play a key role in protecting the fatty layers of the hoof wall. Hooves, like fingernails, have a shine and slippery feel when healthy. This comes from the fats incorporated in their outer structure that keep environmental moisture out but critical tissue moisture in. Zinc and Copper are essential components of the antioxidant enzymes that protect those fats.

Nutritional approaches can control respiratory symptoms and even influence the path of the immune system:
- When dealing with breathing and other allergy concerns pay careful attention to trace mineral balances and adequate Copper, Zinc and magnesium for anti-inflammatory and bronchodilating effects.
- Spirulina platensis is a blue-green algae that has been extensively studied by the World Health Organization as a supplemental “super food”. The properties of Spirulina are not shared by other blue-green algae. Spirulina is an antioxidant; it prevents histamine release and is a potent regulator in the immune system. It suppresses levels of the allergy mediator, IgE, while enhancing production of IgA, the immunoglobin that protects mucosal linings from infection.
- MSM is a derivative of DMSO, whose lung support properties have recently been documented by formal study.
- Jiaogulan is a Chinese herb. It supports healthy histamine levels, supports lung health and a healthy immune response.
- Peppermint sooths the airways and mucus membranes. Grapeseed supports healthy inflammatory response.
Tendon Repair
$25 per pound
Helps support the cells and structure of the tendon fibers for faster and more complete healing.
Ingredients including but not limited to: Beet Root, Collagen, Dandylion, Jiaogulan, Hyaluronic Acid, Lysine, MSM, Vitamin C.
Tendons and ligaments are composed of interwoven strands of the structural protein collagen. It has been known since the 1950s that the major nonessential amino acid in collagen structure is glycine while the most abundant essential amino acid is lysine and its derivative, hydroxylysine.
Lysine is essential, meaning it must be obtained from food and cannot be produced by the horse's body. It is commonly deficient in equine diets, making supplementation important. Lysine is also the source of hydroxylysine, an amino acid which is only found in collagen.
Copper is one of the most common deficiencies in equine diets and an important ingredient for tendon and ligament support. In addition to low dietary levels, bioavailability is compromised by high levels of iron. Iron competes with copper for absorption.
Zinc is included for several reasons. Zinc is another common equine dietary deficiency, one of the most common in fact, and it is always advisable to include zinc when supplementing copper as copper competes for absorption. Zinc additionally plays a key role in bone formation and is important for the integrity of the tendon or ligament insertion sites on bone. As a component of the superoxide dismutase enzyme system, zinc is a key antioxidant. Controlling oxidative stress supports efficient tissue maintenance without deposition of disorganized collagen. Adequate zinc is also needed for normal recruitment of tissue growth factors.
Jiaogulan supports Nitric oxide. NO, has emerged as a pivotal factor in the creation and maintenance of normal tendon and ligament tissue. NO is a simple gas – one nitrogen and one oxygen molecule – which is produced by three different enzyme systems. Micro-tears in tendons and ligaments are a common occurrence for athletes and in the early stages can be effectively managed by the body before they cause any loss of function or serious damage. Research has shown that management of such normal exercise-related wear and tear requires the coordinated activity of all three nitric oxide synthase enzyme isoforms, from iNOS for clean up and nNOS, eNOS to direct formation of normal tendon tissue. Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is an herb with the unique ability to support eNOS activity while assisting in modulation of iNOS.
Identifying potential nutritional weak links and providing support for the body's own homeostatic mechanisms for tissue maintenance is an important weapon in the fight to maintain tendon and ligament integrity.
